All of a Piece

Designed in collaboration with Earnest Studio, All of a Piece is a series of modular tabletop elements that, combined, form landscapes of varying materials, sizes and functions.

The series comprises a flat tray, a shallow bowl, a candleholder and an endcap, each made of marble, granite, and wood. From the smallest trivet, to the largest dining table centerpiece, materials and forms can be interchanged using invisible magnetic connections. A fifth part—a light—can be inserted between modules, adding atmosphere and utility to every arrangement.

BRAVAIS TABLE

Inspired by the process of crystallization, the Bravais Table is based on the tetragonal lattice system used to identify crystal formations through the arrangements of points in space.

The table leg arrangement is designed using the constant distance of  a specified direction from a random set of points. This relocates the structure of the table to the top surface, contrasting conventional table constructions where components of stability are commonly hidden underneath the table top.

CLAMP

Designed for simplicity and engineered for sustainability, Clamp combines the beauty and functionality of wood along with the brilliance of LED technology.

Through a compression fit system, Clamp functions without unnecessary components and is produced almost entirely out of natural materials. The LED arm can be easily adjusted up, down and 360 degrees around the clamping post as it effortlessly grips to the edge of any table.

Clamp was recently featured in the Wall Street Journal as well as granted the 2012 Red Dot Award for product design and innovation.

HUMMINGBIRD

Designed in collaboration with Studio Agata Karolina, Hummingbird is a contemporary take on a classic rocking chair. Through an ergonomic study of office seating and traditional rockers, Hummingbird facilitates both work and relaxation.

The purpose of this project is to understand how a community-based carbon credit could be implemented through the use of social capital. As such, it is a practical exploration into the relationship between classical economics, technology and an interaction design approach.

The project consists of two parts. Part one analyzes the existing credit model, and how it fails to relate to human behaviour on 3 fundamental levels. These levels include issues of measurement standards, proximity of credits generated and the human condition in relation to the carbon economic model. The second part proposes the implementation of a carbon credit system scaled to the community level. 

Inspired by Dr. Robert Putnam’s research into the decline of civc and social organizations, the interaction design implements Bridging and Bonding of social capital, to supplement a personal credit framework within a community context. The proposal consists of an online platform as a means to cultivate community data, and an augmented reality application providing information generated online into the physical community. The potential of online data digitally placed into the physical environment, creates a new opportunity for civic engadement through the use of social capital. download project PDF

The Maastricht-Valkenburg area development (GOMV), has recently granted Marres Projects to commission a new vision for the Plenkertstraat. The area once known as a prestigious tourist destiniation for the Limburg area, requires a common thread to re-connect it’s now fragmented historical and recreational areas. Dana Cannam Design along with Studio Agata Karolina, collaborated with Maastricht-Valkenburg Area Development (GOMV) to create a new vision for the Plenkertstraat in Valkenburg.

By identifying “dead zones” between various districts, the design team applied a swarm analysis to create a parametric wayfinding system. This system utilizes limestone, a material intrinsic to the region, to create impeding gateways. These gateways serve as nodes, allowing tourists to better visualize the landmarks within the Plenkertstraat .
